fbtechreview.comOCTOBER - 20216EDITORIALCOVID-19 has Pushed Food Sustainability EffortsThe COVID 19 pandemic has exposed the fragility and vulnerability of the existing food systems and food consumption patterns worldwide. More than ever, consumers today are highly conscious about the quality, nutritional content, and food prices. Consequently, they demand increased food safety and a stable food supply to cope with the pandemic effectively. On the opposite edge of the business, food producers, suppliers including food and food-tech companies, agriculture-based companies, and so on, are constantly trying to adapt to the changing needs of the consumers. Additionally, the global food supply chain is faltering along with declined workforces on the field. To address the prevailing challenges introduced by the pandemic in the global food system, several practices are being prioritized. Governments, policymakers, and opinion leaders advocate a higher degree of self-sufficiency for food by creating more robust and shorter supply chains that eliminate the obstacles of procuring food across sealed boundaries. This has led to locally produced food playing a more prominent role today. Concepts like farm-to-fork have become popular where local farms are offering fresh yields in the market. These have not only provided the right food to the people but also created local job opportunities and helped the farmers earn their livelihood to cope with the pandemic. Besides, a shift to a more plant-based diet has been noticed, which reduces the negative impact on the environment due to CH4 and N2O emissions and makes cultivated land for food production instead of feed. Health too can benefit, as several non-communicable diseases are associated with excess meat especially, red and processed meat, in the diet. Therefore, meat substitutes like Beyond Meat, Impossible, and dairy product alternatives like Tofu, soy milk, and so on, have been trending. There has also been a transformation from environmentally exploitative to regenerative land and ocean farming practices that can be achieved by promoting sustainable farming, driving market access, and leveling the financial and regulating playing fields for smaller, sustainable farmers instead of large intensive farmers. This can help heal the soils, air, and water and boost economic resilience and local jobs. With the changing trends for the reliable, safe, and stable food system, several companies have emerged in this space, offering their top-notch solutions to help achieve greater food sustainability and secure the future of the coming generations. This brings in the new edition of Food and Beverages Tech Review to highlight some of the top-of-the-line companies in the food sustainability space to showcase their potential to meet the requirements in this changing landscape.Let us know your thoughts!Kevin LoboManaging Editoreditor@fbtechreview.comEDITORIAL STAFFAva GarciaDavies MedowsJohnson Heller Joshua Parkersales@fbtechreview.comeditor@fbtechreview.commarketing@fbtechreview.comEmailVISUALIZERSOlivia SmithVictor Cruz *Some of the Insights are based on the interviews with respective CIOs and CXOs to our editorial staffMANAGING EDITORKevin LoboFood & Beverage Technology Review Visit www.fbtechreview.comCopyright © 2021 ValleyMedia, Inc.
