Algae-based omega-3 innovations are redefining health in APAC, offering sustainable, plant-based DHA solutions that cater to evolving dietary preferences and support cognitive and overall well-being.
Fremont, CA: Algae-Based Omega-3 Innovations Gain Momentum in APAC
By 2050, one in four people in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region will be over 60. With countries like China, Japan, Thailand and South Korea extending or considering longer retirement ages, the spotlight on brain health is intensifying. This demographic shift is also driving changes in consumer behavior, with proactive health measures becoming the norm.
Notably, omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are emerging as trusted allies in this quest for healthy aging. These essential nutrients, renowned for their benefits to cognitive function, cardiovascular health and immunity, are seeing a surge in demand across the region. However, the omega-3 market is evolving significantly, driven by consumers’ shifting preferences and concerns.
Overcoming Barriers to Omega-3 Adoption
Despite their well-documented benefits, omega-3 intake remains critically low in APAC, particularly in Southeast Asia, where omega-3 blood levels are alarmingly low. Key barriers include misconceptions about sources, taste and the physical format of traditional supplements.
The widespread association of omega-3s with fish-based products also poses a challenge, particularly in APAC, where plant-based and vegetarian diets are on the rise. In Thailand, 67 percent of consumers avoid or limit animal-based foods, while 56 percent do the same in Japan. The global rise of ‘flexitarianism’ further fuels demand for plant-based options, creating a ripe opportunity for algae-based omega-3 alternatives.
Large capsules, such as those used for cod liver oil, are another obstacle, especially for older adults. The growing preference for smaller, easier-to-consume formats like gummies illustrates the need for innovation in supplement delivery. Manufacturers can meet this demand by leveraging high-load ingredients for smaller doses while ensuring efficacy.
Algae-Based DHA: A Green Revolution
Algae-derived DHA is emerging as a game-changer in the omega-3 space. Offering the same health benefits as fish-based omega-3s, algae provides a sustainable, plant-based alternative that aligns with evolving dietary preferences. Moreover, algae is the source of omega-3s consumed by fish, making it a more direct and environmentally friendly option.
Despite its potential, awareness of algae-based DHA remains low in APAC. In Indonesia, just 21 percent of consumers turn to plant-based omega-3s, which drops to 15 percent in China.
Advances in microencapsulation technology enable manufacturers to deliver algae-based DHA in a clean, odorless format to address lingering concerns about taste and odor. For instance, ‘FrieslandCampina Ingredients Biotis DHA Flex Powders’ uses microencapsulation to create 100 percent plant-based DHA with a neutral sensory profile. This technology also facilitates the development of multi-functional products, combining omega-3s with other nutrients to offer comprehensive health benefits.
Unlocking New Market Opportunities
The rising interest in plant-based products and the growing awareness of omega-3s present a unique opportunity for manufacturers in APAC. By embracing innovations like microencapsulated algae-based DHA, brands can meet consumer demands for healthier, tastier and more convenient options.
With the omega-3 market still underdeveloped in many parts of the region, this is a pivotal moment for food, beverage and supplement companies to expand their portfolios. By offering superior plant-based solutions, manufacturers can cater to a diverse and discerning consumer base, driving both health outcomes and business growth in the future.
As APAC continues to prioritize healthy aging, algae-based omega-3 innovations stand poised to reshape the future of cognitive and overall health.
