Zest Maps

Choosing where to eat has become increasingly difficult despite the abundance of restaurant recommendations available online. Social media, review sites and food blogs offer endless suggestions, yet many diners still spend considerable time deciding where to go.

Zest Maps was created to address that challenge by automatically capturing and organizing dining experiences into a personalized food map built on real behavior rather than anonymous opinions.

“The future of discovery relies less on searching endless information and more on trusted networks built around real-world behavior,” says Mario Gomez-Hall, co-founder and CEO.

The idea emerged from a simple observation. People routinely track workouts, travel experiences and music habits, yet many meaningful moments happen around meals and often disappear into camera rolls, receipts and forgotten recommendations. Zest was designed to create a lasting record of those experiences while helping users make better dining decisions through people they already know and trust.

Unlike traditional review platforms, it focuses on verified restaurant visits rather than publicly broadcast opinions. Every visit is connected to an actual dining experience, creating a foundation for restaurant discovery based on trusted relationships and personal history.

Building Discovery around Verified Dining Behavior

Restaurant visits are validated through the use of linked transactions of cards. Users can safely link their payment cards to the app, and Zest will be able to map out the restaurant experience automatically without any need for check-ins or continuous updates.

The passive process resolves an issue shared by numerous applications that have tracking features. Users often start off by logging their data regularly but eventually find it hard to keep track. Zest is capable of importing up to two years of dining data once a user registers.

It deliberately chose transaction verification instead of continuous GPS tracking. This approach avoids battery drain while creating a more reliable record of where people actually dined. If a restaurant match is incorrect, users can easily make corrections, helping improve the system’s matching capabilities over time.

The result is a continuously updated dining history that remains current whether users are traveling, exploring a new city or simply enjoying an unexpected meal close to home.

Transforming Dining History into Personal Insight

In addition to visit tracking, Zest makes sure that every restaurant experience becomes part of your personalized history. The users can make annotations, make lists, rate the restaurant and keep track of details related to each meal.

The platform also analyzes dining patterns to reveal insights that emerge over time. Users can identify favorite cuisines, most-visited restaurants, frequently explored cities and broader dining preferences based on actual behavior rather than stated preferences.

This information drives a feature called ‘Fresh Picks,’ which makes restaurant recommendations based on dining history and network activities in accordance with one’s preferences. The more dining information is available, the more personalized the suggestions will be.

People can also examine dining histories of their friends and contacts and learn what kind of cuisine they like, where they go and which restaurants they prefer.

The platform also places significant emphasis on privacy. There is no continuous location tracking. Card linking remains optional and transaction values are never displayed. Users can set profiles to private, control visibility settings and edit or remove visits whenever they choose.

Zest sees several trends converging around personal food tracking. Growing interest in life-logging, declining trust in anonymous recommendations and advances in secure card-linking technology are creating new opportunities for verified discovery experiences. It believes dining history will increasingly become part of an individual's digital identity. Zest’s long-term vision is to make restaurant discovery more effortless by using verified dining behavior, personal taste and trusted social connections to help people remember where they have been and confidently choose where to go next.
