GS1 Forecasts RFID Platforms to Enable Automated Farm-to-Fork Traceability

Avery Dennison Corporation has presented the GS1 case study, which forecasts that RFID technologies will enable automated farm-to-fork traceability. The case study examines how the Independent Purchasing Cooperative/Subway inventory management solution alleviates pain for over 24,000 restaurants across North America through GS1 Standards. The solution changed a weekly nightmare that took several hours into a more precise, automated system that now takes minutes.

“I remember the first time I did my weekly inventory in the restaurant. I was looking at the cases on the shelves, asking myself Why am I holding a paper and a pen to count the inventory? I see barcodes on cases, and I have an iPhone with me,” adds Riscalla.

The new case study contains numerous quotations from Daniel Riscalla. The report concludes with the support of Avery Dennison, a certified GS1 US Solution Partner; developers are investigating the implementation of radio frequency identification (RFID) at the case level and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into inventory management systems. The RFID scanner collects data by sweeping it across a predefined distance. Event tracking enables a fully automated approach to real farm-to-fork traceability when paired with other proprietary Avery Dennison technologies. Further automating the inventory process is expected to reduce labor expenses and improve accuracy and traceability.

Riscalla formed ZippyYum, a software and hardware solutions firm based in California that develops and distributes software and hardware solutions for food shops' operational automation and inventory management. In 2021, Avery Dennison purchased ZippyYum, which formed a part of the company's Retail Branding and Information Solutions (RBIS) segment. The purchase accelerates the growth of the larger RFID Intelligent Labels platform by enhancing operational efficiency and supply chain visibility as the food industry continues to adopt intelligent label technology.
