The number of people suffering from food allergies has excruciatingly increased, forcing researchers to focus on smart technologies that can detect the allergy at a nascent stage and curb it.
FREMONT, CA: Food allergy has become prevalent among school-age children as they suffer, with common ones causing a reaction to foods like wheat, soy, peanuts, and milk. In an attempt to combat this, researchers have started developing smart devices that can help in detecting allergens.
Allergies, Intolerance, and Autoimmune Reactions
Allergies might be common, but many people confuse allergies, immunological reactions to food, and food intolerance. In most cases, allergies show reactions like skin irritation, GI problems, or airway obstruction. On the other hand, intolerances are the result of preexisting irritable bowel syndrome, lack of certain digestive enzymes, or sensitive towards various compounds.
The reactions might be biologically different, but devices are available which are designed to protect from allergies and also detect contamination that may trigger autoimmune reactions.
Detecting Contaminants
Gluten sensitivity has become a common digestive complaint across the world. DHD, skin issues, autism scares, and IBS are some of the common disorders for which people are eliminating gluten.
Some devices use sensors for detecting the presence of gluten in food. Other tools can be used for testing small pieces of food to get instant results. Moreover, these devices can be of great help to patients with wheat allergy, Celiac disease, and gluten sensitivity.
Diagnostic in Disguise
Most of the time, a person may have to wear medical equipment due to their health condition, and they tend to hide it. Children often face this problem, as they refuse to carry medical devices such as alert bracelets, insulin pumps, and other tools to keep them safe.
Keeping these difficulties in mind, researchers have focused on allergy detection technologies disguised as a fashionable accessory. These medical devices can be worn as a necklace, bracelet, or even stored in smartphone cases to prevent them from getting exposed.
Food allergy is a severe issue, and it can lead to anxiety, bullying, and even put limits on their socialization. With these advanced smart technologies, it is hoped that restrictions can be set to such reactions on children’s lives.
