Being aware of what is and what isn’t sustainable is the first step to leading a more sustainable lifestyle. The second step is using that knowledge to make more conscious choices.
FREMONT, CA: Sustainable is a combination of factors, including how the food is produced, how it’s distributed, packaged, and consumed, and it isn’t only about the food itself.
How far a food has traveled plays a major role. But it’s a lot more complicated than that.
Resource usage, environmental impact, and animal agriculture affect sustainability to make health considerations and social and economic impact.
Educating oneself is important. Becoming a regular reader of sites related to sustainability will help. After that, people don’t have to rethink their shopping lists; instead, they can make one or two changes each week or month. For example, one can swap pork mince for veggie mince.
Learning and changing slowly and gradually is key.
There are many ways that one can choose to eat and live more sustainably:
1. Reduce the consumption of meat, fish, and dairy you eat. One of the largest carbon footprints is the impact of Animal Agriculture. One doesn’t have to go full-on vegan; the amount of meat and dairy you eat should be less, and up the veggies!
2. Eating less dairy and meat means that you could spend a little more on sustainably reared produce.
3. I prefer eating foods that are in season. Ensure that seasonal foods must be naturally ripened and are less likely to have come from overseas.
4. Foods that have been produced locally have lesser air miles.
5. Avoid wasting food. Because why would you want to waste all that consciously produced food?!
6. Reduce plastic usage. Plastic only adds to sustainability problems as it’s so energy-intensive to manufacture and recycle.
7. Select fairly traded products.
8. One can grow herbs, fruit, and vegetables. That way, one will realize what it takes to produce them! Encourage our native wildlife and plant life, and plant a bee-friendly garden.
Being part of a like-minded community can make a living and eating sustainably much simpler. One can share ideas, learn from one another and gently encourage change.
